The students will create an ABC book about our community in the past and present using the vocabulary and key concepts they have gleaned. If this activity is provided to the students at the beginning of the Community Unit, it may help focus their learning and the assessment can be used for learning as well as for grading. 1. With the class, review several alphabet books to become familiar with the genre. 2. Have all the resources we used during the unit available for research. 3. Discuss what we have learned in the unit on Stettler, Past and Present. Where is it located? Who is part of our community? Who was important in our community ’ s past? What buildings or places are here? What buildings or places used to be here? What makes our community special or unique? How is our community the same as others? How is it different? How has our community changed over time? 4. Use the lesson plans and sample organizer template located at: A Community ABC organize the students ’ ideas. This document cannot be saved, however, and you cannot add pictures to it on the internet. 5. Assign each student or pair of students a letter of the alphabet. They will write a sentence or two about that aspect of their community ’ s past, and a few about the present. 6. Pictures: with adult assistance, have students scan and save pictures of landmarks and places in the community from brochures, etc. or On a community walk, have student use the digital camera to take photos of the designated places in the community or have students draw pictures of places/landmarks of interest and scan and save them. 7. Working with the students in small groups, scan the pictures and import the pictures and photos into the Windows Moviemaker program. Photostory3 ( http://tinyurl.com/4f869 ) is a similar program which is also easy to use (and free to download). Step by step directions are given in both programs. Students may then read the narrative they wrote and record it on the computer. 8. Time the slides to fit with the students ’ narratives. For example: A is for arena. Stettler ’ s old arena burned down in 1992. (Show picture) Stettler built a new arena that has 2 skating rinks, a library and a swimming pool. (show picture). 9. Celebrate the project by sharing it with the school, administration, and parents. Consider posting it on the school ’ s or town ’ s website (a new FOIP form will need to be signed by parents).
